Ilia Topuria’s Brother Teases Blockbuster Islam Makhachev Superfight With Historic Three-Title Ambitions

Alexandre Topuria has teased a potential superfight between his brother, Ilia Topuria, and the reigning welterweight champion, Islam Makhachev.
‘El Matador‘ is gearing up to lock horns with Justin Gaethje in the main event of UFC Freedom 250 at the White House on June 14. The bout will be Ilia’s first defense of the 155-pound strap. A win would open up the possibility of moving up another weight class in a bid to chase down the pound-for-pound king, Makhachev.
In a recent interview, Alexandre confirmed that there have been talks about a fight with Makhachev, which would allow Ilia to become a three-weight world champion, a feat no other UFC fighter has achieved. Alexandre said:
“There have already been talks. One belt, a second belt, the White House… could a fight for a third title happen? Absolutely. A lot has to line up for the UFC, Islam’s team, and our team. These are two stars, and only one can leave with the win. If the numbers make sense for the UFC, that fight will happen. And if it does, with God’s help, we’ll be the ones leaving victorious.”

Makhachev is rumored to defend his belt against Ian Machado Garry later this year. His recent activity suggests that the potential superfight against Ilia Topuria could materialize sometime early next year, if all cards fall into place.

The UFC has been searching for a superfight. With the heavyweight showdown between Tom Aspinall and Jon Jones no longer on the table, this appears to be their best remaining option. The matchup has all the makings of an instant classic, and the winner would further cement his legacy as one of the greatest mixed martial artists ever to compete in the UFC.
