Josh Hokit Breaks Silence on Failed Derrick Lewis Armbar After UFC Freedom 250 Backlash

Josh Hokit

UFC heavyweight contender Josh Hokit has finally broken the silence on his failed armbar attempt in his fight against Derrick Lewis at UFC Freedom 250.

Hokit improved his professional MMA record to 10-0 with a second-round technical knockout win over ‘The Black Beast.’

During the bout, Hokit leaned on his wrestling early and dominated Lewis on the ground. Towards the end of the opening round, he attempted an armbar, but Lewis refused to tap. The failed submission attempt led several UFC fans and fellow fighters to criticize Hokit’s grappling skills.

The 28-year-old recently appeared on The Ariel Helwani Show, where he provided clarity on his failed armbar attempt. Hokit suggested that he was simply having fun in the moment and was not trying to force Lewis to tap. He told Helwani:

“God forbid someone has a little fun in the cage, huh. I already have an armbar finish in my career. Submitting Derrick at the White House, I don’t think that it would’ve sat right with me.”

“I was gonna see if he’s just gonna panic-tap. I didn’t want for the fight to end like that. I think a knockout at the White House against the greatest knockout artist is so much better than an armbar finish.”

Jose Aldo Calls Out Josh Hokit for Taking Trash Talk Too Far

In an exclusive interview with UFC Daily News, with the help of Covers.com, UFC Hall of Famer Jose Aldo has slammed Josh Hokit for his controversial statements.

Aldo believes that Hokit is trying to play a character and often takes his trash-talk game too far. The Brazilian said:

“First of all, regarding his behaviour, I think it’s pointless. I think he’s trying to create a character and move more into the trash-talk side of things, but he’s gone a bit too far.”

Hokit also found himself in trouble after he made a derogatory comment toward Michelle Obama during his post-fight octagon interview after defeating Derrick Lewis. UFC CEO Dana White later labelled the 28-year-old’s comments ‘disgusting.’
