Former UFC interim lightweight champion Dustin Poirier has publicly apologized for using a racial slur during his arrest at Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport, admitting that his actions were unacceptable regardless of intent.
The incident occurred in June after Poirier was reportedly removed from a Delta flight due to alleged intoxication. According to police reports and body-camera footage that later surfaced online, the situation escalated into a heated confrontation with airport security personnel and police officers.
During the altercation, ‘The Diamond‘ allegedly threatened officers and used offensive language before being taken into custody on public intoxication-related charges.
Speaking on The Ariel Helwani Show, Poirier addressed the controversy in full. He said:
“Growing up where I grew up, speaking like that was a normal thing. I don’t talk like that, but in the moment, drunk, I go back to those dark times.
“I apologize. I shouldn’t have said what I said. I didn’t mean it in a racist way at all, but that doesn’t matter. That’s not something that should be said ever.”

Dustin Poirier revealed that he has attempted to personally apologize to those involved and admitted the incident forced him to reevaluate his relationship with alcohol and life after retirement.
The 37-year-old has faced several difficulties since stepping away from competition. He recently disclosed that longtime sponsor Bud Light ended its partnership with him following the arrest, resulting in a significant financial setback.
One of the most beloved fighters in UFC history, Poirier retired in 2025 after an illustrious career that included victories over Conor McGregor, Justin Gaethje, Max Holloway, Eddie Alvarez and Michael Chandler.
While acknowledging that the airport incident was one of the lowest moments of his post-fighting life, Poirier expressed hope that he can learn from the experience and move forward with a renewed focus on his family and future outside the cage.
