Tom Aspinall Steps Away From Everything: UFC Heavyweight Champion Vacates Title, Announces Social Media Break in Same Breath

Tom Aspinall

Tom Aspinall isn’t just walking away from the heavyweight title; he’s stepping back from public life entirely while he fights to save his career.

Tom Aspinall has decided to vacate

In a lengthy Instagram statement, Tom Aspinall confirmed he’s vacating the belt due to ongoing complications with his eye, the result of multiple surgeries, accidents, and infections that have left him unable to get medically cleared to compete. He revealed he had actually agreed to a fight date and was back sparring and feeling ready, only for an accident to cause further damage to his right eye, pushing his return timeline back into uncertainty.

“Anything you read in the media is simply noise. People are creating their own narratives. This is the truth,” Aspinall wrote, before detailing that the UFC and Hunter Campbell have been kept informed at every stage, reviewing his tests, procedures, and medical records throughout the process.

But the champion isn’t just going quiet in the cage; he’s going quiet everywhere. In a follow-up comment, Aspinall announced he’s stepping away from social media entirely, handing control over to his media team “for the foreseeable future” so he can focus solely on getting medically cleared. He noted he’ll continue working with sponsors, but the public-facing version of Aspinall is effectively on pause alongside his in-cage career.

The dual withdrawal paints a picture of a champion trying to remove every distraction, both the pressure of competing before he’s ready and the noise of public scrutiny, while he deals with what he called fouls that “changed the course of my career.”

Aspinall was firm that stepping away from the title isn’t stepping away from the sport, but for now, both his championship and his voice online are on hold indefinitely.
