Tom Aspinall is one of the most physically imposing fighters on the planet, the undisputed UFC heavyweight champion, and by his own admission, completely terrified every single time he has to fight.
Speaking on Great Company with Jamie Lang, Aspinall pulled back the curtain on what actually happens backstage at MMA events in a way that most fighters never publicly acknowledge.
Aspinall said:
“I can’t think of much scarier than having to fight somebody.”
He did not frame this as a weakness or an anomaly. He framed it as the reality of what every fighter experiences regardless of how calm they appear on camera.
“I’ve been in changing rooms and locker rooms, I’ve been backstage at MMA events all my life, trust me when I tell you fighters get scared. They might not say it. I’ve seen people nearly passing out because they’re so scared; I’ve seen people throwing up on multiple occasions because they’re that scared.”

What Tom Aspinall Has Been Through to Get Back
The backdrop to these comments is everything Tom Aspinall has endured since his first fight with Ciryl Gane at UFC 321 ended in a no-contest after he suffered double eye pokes that left him with traumatic bilateral Brown’s syndrome. What followed was 108 days of specialist appointments, surgery on both eyes at Optegra Eye Hospital in February, and months of being unable to drive. Aspinall has since stated he believes the fouls were deliberate.
He is now in training camp and targeting a September return in Paris against interim champion ‘Bon Gamin’ Ciryl Gane, with both fighters and their teams pushing hard for a confirmed date. The undisputed heavyweight title and a very personal score are both on the line.
