UFC welterweight contender Sean Brady has identified Carlos Prates as the ideal opponent for his next Octagon appearance, believing a victory over the Brazilian knockout artist would immediately place him back in the title picture at 170 pounds.
Speaking with Home of Fight, Brady explained why the matchup makes sense for both fighters, who currently find themselves in uncertain positions near the top of the division. He said:
“There’s only a few fights that make sense to get me right back into title contention and Prates is one of them.”
“Right now, we’re both in weird spots in terms of the division and where we’re both at, so why not?”

Sean Brady has firmly re-established himself as one of the UFC’s top welterweights despite suffering a setback against Michael Morales at UFC 322, where he was stopped in the opening round. Rather than allowing that defeat to derail his momentum, the Philadelphia native bounced back impressively with a dominant unanimous decision victory over Joaquin Buckley at UFC 328.
Before the loss to Morales, Brady had put together one of the strongest runs in the division. He submitted former champion Leon Edwards in London after thoroughly controlling the fight on the ground, following a dominant decision victory over Gilbert Burns and a kimura submission of Kelvin Gastelum. His only other UFC defeat came against former champion Belal Muhammad in 2022.
Prates, meanwhile, remains one of the division’s most dangerous strikers. The Brazilian has built his reputation on explosive finishing ability, carrying genuine one-punch knockout power capable of ending a fight at any moment. His aggressive pressure, sharp boxing, and clinical finishing instincts have made him one of the UFC’s fastest-rising contenders.
Stylistically, however, Brady presents arguably the toughest test of Prates’ career.
A Brazilian jiu-jitsu black belt with elite chain wrestling and relentless top control, Brady has repeatedly neutralized dangerous strikers by dragging fights into his world. His ability to mix takedowns with suffocating positional control could significantly limit Prates’ opportunities to unleash his devastating striking arsenal.
For ‘The Nightmare,’ stuffing Brady’s takedowns and keeping the fight standing would be essential. For Brady, another dominant grappling performance against one of the division’s most feared knockout artists could erase memories of the Morales defeat and vault him straight back into championship contention.
With both men chasing another crack at UFC gold, Brady believes the matchup is as logical as it is compelling, and it is difficult to argue otherwise.
