Muhammad Mokaev has long been regarded as one of the most talented flyweights in the sport. The British fighter made an immediate impact in the UFC, compiling a perfect 7-0 record inside the Octagon with victories over notable names such as Tim Elliott, Alex Perez, and Manel Kape.

However, in one of the most surprising roster decisions in recent years, the UFC released Mokaev shortly after his unanimous decision victory over Kape at UFC 304 in July 2024.

Reports at the time suggested that concerns regarding issues behind the scenes and working relationships contributed to the decision. UFC CEO Dana White also hinted at factors outside of competition playing a role in the promotion’s decision, despite acknowledging Mokaev’s immense talent.

The release sparked significant debate within the MMA community, with many fighters and fans questioning the move given Mokaev’s undefeated record and status as one of the division’s top contenders.

Khabib Nurmagomedov’s latest comments only add further weight to the belief that the 25-year-old remains a championship-caliber fighter.

‘The Eagle’s’ opinion also carries significant credibility considering his own legendary career. The former lightweight champion retired with a perfect 29-0 record and built his legacy around an elite wrestling-heavy style that overwhelmed opponents such as Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje.

While Mokaev’s immediate future remains uncertain, Nurmagomedov is convinced that his elite grappling abilities could eventually propel him to UFC gold if he receives another opportunity on the sport’s biggest stage.
