Josh Hokit has once again inserted himself into a mainstream controversy, this time offering his take on the backlash directed at actress Sydney Sweeney.
“Y’all are mad at Sydney Sweeney for the same reason women hated Medusa. Because every time a man looked at her, he got rock hard,” Hokit said.
Part of a Pattern for Josh Hokit
The comment fits a now-familiar pattern for the UFC heavyweight, who has built much of his public profile on deliberately provocative statements rather than his performances in the Octagon. Most notably, Hokit drew widespread criticism at the UFC White House event for a comment calling former First Lady Michelle Obama a man. That remark was condemned by nearly everyone across the sport, including UFC CEO Dana White, but Hokit has publicly refused to walk it back. He’s also previously made similar comments about WNBA star Brittney Griner during a post-fight poem, and has repeatedly used media appearances to target public figures and celebrities.
Josh Hokit Says He Won’t Apologize
Speaking about the White House controversy, Josh Hokit made clear he has no plans to change his approach, saying he doesn’t regret his comments and won’t backtrack the way other fighters have. He’s acknowledged he isn’t trying to upset Dana White or Hunter Campbell, but insists he’s unbothered by criticism from anyone outside the promotion, arguing those critics weren’t around during the difficult stretches of his career.
The Strategy Behind Josh Hokit’s Antics
Whatever the reaction, the approach has worked in terms of raising his profile. Since signing with the UFC off Contender Series, Hokit has fought multiple times, climbed into the top of the heavyweight rankings, and collected several six-figure post-fight bonuses along the way. His Sydney Sweeney comment is unlikely to be the last time he wades into a headline that has nothing to do with fighting.
