Islam Makhachev’s head coach, Javier Mendez, believes the reigning UFC welterweight champion does not need to rely on his trademark wrestling to defeat Ian Machado Garry when the two meet at UFC 330.
Speaking on the Weighing In podcast, Mendez acknowledged that taking Garry to the mat would likely be the safest game plan. However, he insisted Makhachev has evolved into such a complete mixed martial artist that he can comfortably outstrike the Irish contender if necessary.
“Islam doesn’t have to take Ian down. Is it the better option? Probably. But he doesn’t have to. His striking has evolved to the point where he can beat him on the feet.”
The comments come ahead of one of the most anticipated title fights of the year, with Makhachev looking to make the first defense of the UFC welterweight championship after capturing the belt from Jack Della Maddalena.
