Ian Machado Garry has promised to return stronger after falling short on points against Islam Makhachev, insisting that the setback will not stop his pursuit of the UFC lightweight title.

Garry addressed the loss backstage and made it clear that he has no intention of allowing the result to define his career. The Irishman admitted that Makhachev was able to execute his game plan at a higher level, but maintained that the preparation and effort from his team were not lacking.

“There’s nothing we did that didn’t work today, just more of it. We just get to the top of the mountain, and we fell short.”

Ian Machado Garry Takes Inspiration From Charles Oliveira After Makhachev Loss

Ian Machado Garry also referenced Charles Oliveira when discussing how fighters should respond after suffering a defeat. Oliveira has experienced several major setbacks throughout his career before eventually capturing the UFC lightweight championship, and Garry believes that journey provides an important example. He said:

“I’ve learned this from Charles [Oliveira] – losing in this sport means nothing. It’s how you come back from it.”

The loss is a significant setback for Garry after he had established himself as one of the leading contenders in the UFC’s welterweight division before making his move toward lightweight. Facing Makhachev represented an opportunity to prove himself against one of the most accomplished fighters in the sport.

However, Garry’s immediate reaction suggests that he remains fully committed to reaching the top. He concluded:

“Don’t stop. We come back, we do it again.”

Rather than making excuses for the result, Garry accepted the defeat and turned his attention toward the future. The experience of sharing the Octagon with Makhachev for 25 minutes will give him valuable information to take into his next training camp, particularly when it comes to dealing with an elite-level opponent capable of maintaining pressure throughout a fight.

Garry will now have to rebuild his momentum and work his way back into title contention. The road will likely require several victories, but the 28-year-old remains confident that he can make another run.

For Garry, the defeat is a fall rather than an ending. His next challenge will be turning the lessons from Makhachev into improvements and beginning the climb back toward the top of the lightweight division.
