The details behind Anthony Smith’s arrest are significantly more serious than the initial charges suggested. The Sarpy County Attorney’s Office in Nebraska released a full statement to MMA Junkie following Smith’s initial court appearance on Wednesday, and the allegations paint a deeply troubling picture.
What Anthony Smith Is Accused of Doing
According to the attorney’s office, the incident began at a bar in Gretna, Nebraska. ‘Lionheart’ allegedly threatened to kill his wife if she refused to leave with him, then grabbed her and physically forced her into a vehicle. During the drive, investigators concluded that when she managed to escape the vehicle, Smith attempted to run her over multiple times.
She was able to maneuver out of the way on each occasion and avoided physical injury. A warrant was subsequently issued, and Smith turned himself in to authorities.
Smith appeared before a judge and was granted a $500,000 bond. As a condition of that bond, he is prohibited from having any contact whatsoever with his wife. He is scheduled to return to court on August 17 and has not made any public statement regarding the allegations.
The Three Felony Charges
As reported when the arrest first became public, Anthony Smith faces first-degree domestic assault, terroristic threats, and first-degree false imprisonment. The domestic assault charge carries a potential sentence of up to 20 years if he is found guilty.
