Opinion: Ian Machado Garry Gave Islam Makhachev Respect Throughout UFC 330 But Did the Champion Show the Same Courtesy

Islam Makhachev won UFC 330 clearly and deserved every point on every scorecard. Nothing in this piece challenges that. What it does challenge is a specific moment during the fight that sat uncomfortably against the broader story of how Ian Machado Garry conducted himself throughout the contest.

Ian Machado Garry’s Conduct Was Notable

Over the course of the fight, Ian Garry repeatedly demonstrated a level of respect toward the champion that stood out even in the middle of a world title fight. On more than one occasion, after landing low kicks that strayed close to Makhachev’s groin, Garry paused, checked on his opponent, and touched gloves rather than immediately pressing his advantage.

These were not moments of weakness or poor strategy in isolation. They were conscious gestures of sportsmanship from a challenger who understood the difference between competing hard and taking cheap advantage of a vulnerable moment.

The Moment That Raised Questions About Islam Makhachev’s Sportsmanship

Then there was the head kick. Following a clinching exchange, Ian Machado Garry was backing away and appeared momentarily off-guard, not actively engaging and not in a clear defensive position. Islam Makhachev landed a head kick that dropped him immediately. The kick was legal. Nobody is arguing otherwise.

But given the context of how Garry had behaved throughout the evening, the question worth asking is whether Makhachev could have chosen a different moment to attack.

This is not about rules. Makhachev broke none. This is about the unwritten code that elite fighters often operate by, where repeated gestures of respect from an opponent earn at minimum a moment of reciprocal awareness. Garry gave that to Makhachev multiple times. Whether Makhachev returned it is a matter of opinion.

The sport rewards ruthlessness. But does it have to?
