Max Holloway Praises Conor McGregor for Going Public on Addiction and Recovery Ahead of UFC 329

Max Holloway, Conor McGregor

The respect between Conor McGregor and Max Holloway heading into UFC 329 extends well beyond the octagon. Holloway has stepped forward to publicly acknowledge McGregor’s openness about his personal struggles, and the context behind what the Irishman went through makes that acknowledgment carry genuine weight.

Conor Holloway Gives McGregor His Flowers

Max Holloway praised Conor McGregor for being open about his addiction struggles, insisting he deserves respect for speaking out. ‘Blessed’ told ESPN MMA:

“It takes a real man to come out and talk about his feelings. With the influence he has, bringing it up will encourage more people to talk about it, and more guys will go get mental health checkups or other checkups. Shout out to him for doing that.”

What Conor McGregor Actually Went Through

The backstory deserves its full context. Between the 2021 leg break and this comeback sits a period of genuine darkness. Conor McGregor disappeared from social media entirely before resurfacing to reveal he had travelled to Tijuana, Mexico, working alongside Stanford University doctors to undergo a 36-hour Ibogaine treatment addressing trauma, TBI, PTSD, and depression. He described being shown his own death during the experience, looking down at himself and then out from a coffin, before a spiritual encounter he said saved him completely.

Add the civil court verdict in the Nikita Hand case and an 18-month anti-doping suspension for missed whereabouts tests in 2024, and the picture of those five years becomes considerably heavier than ring rust alone.

Faith, Humility, and a Different Conor McGregor before UFC 329

The wealth display that defined his peak years is something Conor McGregor has consciously stepped back from.

‘The Notorious’ told Ariel Helwani recently that ‘God knows his heart,’ adding that he is thankful for the lessons life has taught him. He has no regrets and is determined not to repeat the same mistakes. The man walking into UFC 329 on July 11 to rematch Max Holloway has done more internal work than anyone outside his circle fully appreciates.
