UFC 330 has its main event. Islam Makhachev makes the first defense of his welterweight title against top contender Ian Machado Garry on August 15 in Philadelphia at Xfinity Mobile Arena.
Islam Makhachev Wanted Someone Else
Islam Makhachev didn’t exactly have Ian Machado Garry circled on his calendar. He wanted Michael Morales or Kamaru Usman. Instead, he now gets the Irishman, who has been a company man and has taken short-notice bouts in the last 2 years.
“The Future” deserves the title shot on pure merit.
Ian Machado Garry Is Taking This Seriously
Ian Machado Garry traveled to Gori, Georgia, to sharpen his wrestling months before the UFC 330 bout was announced. He is not treating this like a payday, and his training footage over the months suggests that he is hungry to dethrone the P4P king and UFC welterweight titleholder.
The Dubliner’s only UFC loss was against short-notice opponent and former sparring buddy Shavkat Rakhmonov in December 2024, where “The Future” at least survived the full fight, something nobody else in Rakhmonov’s career managed to do.
Back-to-back wins over Carlos Prates and Belal Muhammad since then have rebuilt his stock considerably and made him the top contender.
Islam Makhachev Is Simply On Another Level
Islam Makhachev at 28-1 with losses only in the rearview mirror of 2015 is a genuinely frightening proposition for anyone at 170 pounds. He vacated the lightweight title in 2025 after 4 title defenses and making history, went up, and beat Jack Della Maddalena dominantly at UFC 322 to claim welterweight gold.
With Ilia Topuria losing his title to Justin Gaethje last weekend at the White House, the “El Matador” vs. Makhachev superfight does not make sense right now.
Meanwhile, Ian Machado Garry will get his chance to pull off another major upset when he faces Makhachev at UFC 330. If he can dethrone the champion, it could, funnily enough, once more open the door for the Makhachev vs. Topuria matchup, with both stars coming off losses.
Garry certainly has the tools, confidence, and heart to make things interesting, but Makhachev brings a complete and suffocating skill set that has broken down some of the sport’s most dangerous fighters. One thing is certain: August 15 in Philadelphia is shaping up to be a very long night for someone.
