Raoni Barcelos has spoken publicly for the first time since one of the scariest scenes in recent UFC memory, assuring fans he’s doing well as he continues undergoing medical tests in the hospital.
“I wanted to send you all a message to let you know that I’m okay. I’m doing very well, and I’m getting all the necessary tests done here at the hospital. Man, I gave everything I had inside that cage. Like I said before, the only way I was leaving that cage was being carried out. And that’s how it ended up happening. It wasn’t the way I wanted it to go. I wanted to become champion and leave with the victory, but God knows everything. So, on to the next one. I’m here, I’m okay, and I’ll be back. I’ll come back stronger,” Barcelos said.
What Happened to Raoni Barcelos at UFC Vegas 121
Raoni Barcelos was headlining his first UFC main event against Raul Rosas Jr. on September 26 at the UFC Apex in Las Vegas, and for four rounds, the fight was going his way. He was ahead on every scorecard heading into the fifth and final round, taking real damage around his left eye along the way but still controlling the pace against the younger, rising contender. With one round left to survive to secure the win, Rosas dragged him down near the fence early in the fifth. Moments later, without any clear strike causing it, Barcelos suddenly went stiff and lost consciousness.
Referee Herb Dean immediately waved off the fight, and ringside doctors rushed in as medical personnel checked his pulse before he was stretchered out of the Octagon.
A Timeline of Raoni Barcelos’s Recovery
- Saturday night, in-fight: Barcelos collapses in round five with no apparent knockout blow; Herb Dean stops the fight and he’s stretchered out, not regaining consciousness until he was in the ambulance.
- Saturday night: The UFC confirms Barcelos was transported to a Level 1 trauma center and is “stable, alert and responsive” following a CT scan.
- Sunday: His coach, Davi Ramos, tells fans Barcelos is conscious, talking, and moving.
- Monday: Barcelos posts his first public comments, and his physician, Dr. Gustavo Medeiros, tells MMA Fighting he is “lucid and oriented,” walking and eating, but needs continued observation.
Doctors Call It a Sudden Collapse, Fans Speculate Stroke or Heart Attack
The exact medical cause remains unconfirmed. Raoni Barcelos’s team has not labeled the incident with a specific diagnosis, and his coach has explicitly ruled out both a stroke and a heart attack as explanations, though testing is still ongoing. Because the collapse happened without an obvious strike, much of the MMA community has speculated openly about a possible cardiac or neurological event, with some fans and commentators specifically floating stroke or heart attack theories online despite no official confirmation either way. Barcelos himself has downplayed it, saying simply that he “just fainted.”
Raoni Barcelos Isn’t Done
At 39 years old, the frightening nature of the collapse has led a number of fans and analysts to publicly suggest it may be time for Barcelos to consider retirement. Barcelos has firmly rejected that idea in his own statement, making clear he intends to return to competition once he’s cleared, framing the setback as part of the sport rather than a signal to walk away.
