Sean Strickland Tears Into Din Thomas After Gillian Robertson’s UFC 330 Loss

UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland has taken aim at Din Thomas following the veteran coach’s decision to retire from cornering fighters after Gillian Robertson’s loss to Mackenzie Dern at UFC 330.

Robertson was dominated by Dern in the co-main event, with the reigning strawweight champion controlling the majority of the five-round contest through superior striking, takedowns, and ground control. Dern ultimately secured a unanimous decision victory after comfortably picking up the first four rounds of the fight.

Thomas was in Robertson’s corner for the fight and later appeared on the UFC Post Show, where he announced that he was stepping away from cornering fighters. Explaining his decision, Thomas said he had committed to guiding Robertson through her career and taking her as far as he believed she could go, before suggesting that her defeat to Dern may have shown that she had reached her ceiling.

The comments immediately drew criticism across the MMA community, with many fans and fighters questioning the decision to publicly discuss a fighter’s perceived limitations immediately after a difficult loss.

Strickland was among the most vocal.

Sean Strickland Goes After Din Thomas

Never one to filter his opinions, Sean Strickland responded directly to Thomas on social media. The reigning UFC middleweight champion accused Thomas of being a poor coach and questioned his mentality, while also pointing to his own career as an example of what fighters can accomplish after setbacks.

Strickland has built a reputation as one of the UFC’s most outspoken personalities. Whether discussing opponents, coaches, the promotion, or the wider MMA industry, the former welterweight contender rarely holds back, and his latest comments toward Thomas were no different.

Strickland also referenced his own experience of fighting across multiple weight classes and overcoming difficult moments throughout his career. His biggest recent comeback came at UFC 328, when he reclaimed the middleweight championship by defeating Khamzat Chimaev via split decision. The victory made Strickland a two-time UFC middleweight champion and handed Chimaev the first defeat of his professional career.

That background gives additional context to Strickland’s criticism. His career has included title losses, difficult matchups, and setbacks, but he has repeatedly returned to the top of the division.

Din Thomas’ Comments Spark MMA Backlash

Din Thomas has spent nearly three decades coaching and cornering fighters, including championship-level athletes, before deciding to step away from the role following UFC 330. He is expected to continue his work as a UFC analyst and media personality.

Gillian Robertson, meanwhile, now faces the challenge of rebuilding after her first UFC title opportunity ended in a one-sided defeat.

Sean Strickland’s criticism has added another layer to an already controversial moment. Whether Thomas’ assessment proves correct remains to be seen, but his comments have clearly struck a nerve throughout the MMA community.
