Conor McGregor’s preparation for UFC 329 has taken a dimension nobody saw coming. Ahead of the most anticipated comeback fight in MMA history, McGregor has revealed that for the first time in his entire career he has been practising complete abstinence from any form of physical touch as part of his camp for the Max Holloway rematch on Saturday night.
Conor McGregor Was Living in the Gym Before the Family Arrived
Before his family touched down in Las Vegas by private jet earlier today, Conor McGregor had been completely locked in, living, training, eating, and sleeping inside the gym in the weeks building up to UFC 329.
He told TNT Sports about welcoming his family to Las Vegas after their arrival, a moment that marks the shift from total isolation mode into fight week. The family’s presence now brings a different energy, one ‘The Notorious’ has always drawn from when the lights get brightest.
Conor McGregor’s Own Words on Abstinence
He said on media day:
“The fire is in my belly roaring, and it’s about to be released on Saturday night. I’ve practiced abstaining also in this camp, it’s the first time I’ve ever done it, from any type of physical touch. That’s been intense, I’m excited to see what it brings on Saturday night. I’m gonna have a good night Saturday, all across the board.”
The concept of abstinence as a performance tool has been debated in combat sports for decades. Conor McGregor acknowledging it as something completely new in his preparation suggests he has left absolutely nothing on the table for this one.
Gym living, total isolation, and now this. The version of McGregor walking into T-Mobile Arena on July 11 against Max Holloway has been constructed more deliberately and more completely than any previous iteration of the fighter.
