Conor McGregor is not short of targets heading into UFC 329, and Alexander Volkanovski has now been added to the list. McGregor addressed a potential fight with the current and two-time featherweight champion directly and left no room for ambiguity about how he views the matchup.
Conor McGregor’s Assessment
The Irishman told MAIN EVENT:
“For sure [I’d fight Volk]. Look, styles make fights; it’s not a good matchup for him. He’s not a bad fighter, but he’s not on the level of the Mac.”
McGregor’s confidence in that matchup is not entirely without basis when you look at what has happened to the Aussie recently.
Alexander Volkanovski’s Chin Has Been Exposed Repeatedly
The evidence of Alexander Volkanovski’s durability issues has been building for some time now. Ilia Topuria knocked him out cold to take the featherweight title. Islam Makhachev knocked him out in their lightweight rematch.
Diego Lopes, a fighter nowhere near Topuria or Islam’s level, dropped him during their featherweight contest. Three separate occasions across recent fights where Volkanovski’s chin has been the deciding factor. For a southpaw counter striker with a left hand as precise as McGregor’s, that pattern is an obvious conversation starter.

The Problem Conor McGregor Has Right Now
Before any Alexander Volkanovski conversation becomes real, ‘The Notorious’ has to beat someone who Volkanovski has defeated three times. McGregor beating Max Holloway again at UFC 329 on July 11 would therefore carry considerably more weight than the scorebooks alone suggest.
Why the Conor McGregor vs. Alexander Volkanovski Fight Is Near Impossible to Make
Conor McGregor’s team has strongly hinted that his days at lightweight are finished, making welterweight his home for whatever remains of his career. Alexander Volkanovski making 170 pounds is essentially impossible given his frame and natural size. The matchup makes for great conversation, but the weight class reality makes it next to impossible to actually schedule.
