Jon Jones cannot help himself when it comes to Alex Pereira, and his latest comments following the UFC Freedom 250 co-main event carry a familiar mix of genuine analysis and pointed satisfaction.
‘Bones’ believes Pereira’s decision to come in heavier than necessary for the heavyweight debut directly cost him the speed and confidence that make him dangerous.
Jon Jones Breaks Down Where It Went Wrong for Alex Pereira
Speaking to Red Corner MMA, Jon Jones offered a tactical assessment of why Alex Pereira got finished.
“I think he would have been better off fighting around 230, 235, keeping that speed. I feel like his power would have possibly translated over.”
He also pointed to Gane’s southpaw stance and unorthodox movement as creating “the perfect storm” for Pereira on that particular night, a combination of stylistic factors that neutralised what makes ‘Poatan’ elite before the Brazilian could find his rhythm.
How Alex Pereira Actually Lost
Alex Pereira moved permanently to heavyweight after cleaning out the light heavyweight division and set his sights on a third world title at UFC Freedom 250. Gane stopped him in the second round in the co-main event, with Pereira subsequently accusing the Frenchman of landing illegal strikes while he was grounded, fouls that referee Herb Dean did not punish with point deductions. The Brazilian has since stated he is staying at heavyweight regardless.
